Greater Love Hath No Man

Isn’t it awesome how the same scripture can speak so many things at different times of our lives?

“This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:12-13 NLT

I always thought laying down our lives meant in a literal, physical sense. You know, being held at gunpoint and declaring Jesus, or jumping in front of a bullet to save someone’s life. But in this season, God is speaking to me about letting go (laying down) everything I expected or wanted my life to look like…everything I wanted my husband to be like… everything I wanted and expected to become myself… and completely trust Him with it all. You see, I can’t love myself, my life, my kids or my husband the way I should if I’m holding up a measuring tape or magnifying glass over every single detail. To love, to truly love the way God intended, I must put away my expectations, push away the fears, and live each day sacrificially trusting that HE will fulfill all my needs above and beyond my wildest dreams. But the truth is, it’s not about me getting what I want. It’s about being a vessel for God to heal, to restore, and to love someone else. To love is to be a missionary. To do the work of God that can only be done completely with a surrendered life to restore the life of the one in front of you.

Love is not a thing to be acquired and contained. It is like the wind… and we must open the windows.
