The Trash Collector

Have you ever been so #inspired by a someone’s unconventional response to something, that it has stuck with you over the years? Something so powerful, yet so simple that it often goes unnoticed?

I will never forget my very first day riding along with my Editor on a sales call (back when I was in ad sales for a local magazine). As we were about to leave our first meeting, he told me to get in the car and prepare for the next stop… he would be right back. I figured he had left something behind, but watched in amazement as he repeatedly bent down to pick things up off the ground. Surely he had dropped something valuable! But no, he was picking up the trash and walking it to a garbage can “like a responsible citizen.” Wow. Who does that?! This man… successful, smart, financially free… was taking the time out if his BUSY WORK DAY to pick up trash in a random parking lot, instead of rushing to his next “money” call. I couldn’t believe it. I was inspired and ashamed in that same moment. But that was the LAST time I would feel ashamed and the FIRST time my behavior would forever #change.

Now, wherever I go (especially #publicrestrooms) I always #payattention to my #surroundings and ask myself, “how can I leave this place better than I found it?” I wipe bathroom counters, pick up #trash and toilet paper off floors, and wipe down toilets. Yes, I actually wipe down #toilets. And I never say a word (well, until now). Because honestly, it doesn’t matter if people see what I do or not. What matters is that I took my time to #help someone else feel comfortable in a sometimes uncomfortable environment. What matters is that I did my part to keep my #worldand my #community #beautiful. 💖 And it feels DARN good every time!!

So I #challenge you today, friends, to pay attention to your surroundings. To stop the hustle and bustle long enough to #serve someone, help make someone’s job easier, or to be the reason that someone’s experience is the best it could possibly be. YOU have the power to #changetheworld if you pay attention!
